Lifestyle Medicine

What is Lifestyle Medicine?

Lifestyle Medicine encompasses evidence-based therapies focused on promoting health and combating chronic diseases. These therapies include adopting a whole food, plant-predominant dietary lifestyle, engaging in regular physical activity, prioritizing restorative sleep, effectively managing stress, abstaining from risky substances, and fostering positive social connections. The goal of Lifestyle Medicine is to treat and potentially reverse chronic diseases by addressing underlying lifestyle factors.

Conditions

Therapeutic lifestyle interventions have been shown to have favorable outcomes for a variety of health conditions. It is widely acknowledged that the more intensive the intervention, the greater the therapeutic benefits. Some conditions known to respond positively to these interventions include:

  • Cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, and heart failure.
  • Metabolic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome.
  • Obesity and overweight-related complications.
  • Chronic inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel diseases.
  • Mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and stress-related conditions.
  • Respiratory conditions, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Certain types of cancer, particularly those influenced by lifestyle factors like breast and colon cancer.
  • Neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
